If you’re not sure about your Valentine’s Day plans, why don’t you take the plunge and throw a stress-free brunch for him. Eating, drinking, good banter and just the both of you, while you show off your culinary skills and please the one that’s got you all hot & bothered. Throwing him a brunch spread may sound cumbersome and eating out at fancy restaurant might be the most convenient alternative, but fret not, here are some simple tips to get you sailing through effortlessly.
Decorate: Lots of candles of course. Get different candles, flat round ones, long skinny ones, and some oversized ones. Apart from the ambience that candles usually bring to an intimate setting, you’ll be showing off some serious ‘event coord’ skills.
Tip: Use left over wine bottles as candle holders, this also adds to the general aesthetic.
Dinnerware: Keep everything simple. An all white table setting is modern and chic as it creates a blank canvas for your food.
Tip: Personalised place cards with little notes are always a nice touch.
Whats on the Menu? Go with what you know!
FOOD: Keep it simple, tasty and definitely play on your strengths. Remember, the aim is to deliver this stress-free brunch and walk away with him looking at you like a superstar! Prep like a boss and avoid meals that need constant supervision like stir fry. Don’t sweat the small stuff and feel free to buy your own dessert. If you want something a bit fancy, steak and eggs are always a good idea.
Tip: Show off! Have a segment of the meal prepared or finished off right in front of him. Also, clean as you go.
Drinks: It’s never too early to drink on Valentine’s Day. Water, freshly squeezed juice, and the alcoholic beverages/cocktails are a must. Sparkling wine is a less expensive alternative to champagne, but by all means, go for champagne if you can. Don’t forget ice.
Tip: If your hubby loves his beer, then stick to the theme (him) and make a beer cocktail. Here’s one by our friends at Rum n Passion:
- The Young Banger
- 3oz Apple cider
- 2oz Tequila
- Pinch of Cinnamon
- 4oz Orange Juice
- Splash of Lemonade
Freeze apple cider in ice cubes trays. Add tequila, orange juice, cinnamon, frozen Apple cider in a boston shaker. Shake vigorously and pour into glass. Top up with lemonade and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
Select your Entertainment
Make your playlist before hand with tons of songs to last you through the duration of your meal. Music plays a big role on the general ambience and sets the tone for “later”. A good mix of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, and some good instrumentals will have him focus on you and not singing along. Don’t forget to mute all your notifications, if you’re using your phone for the music.
Tip: Bluetooth connected speakers are all the rave right now. No wires are needed which means you can easily control the music straight from your chair.
For something that says comfy home look, sexy and possibly should be on the floor in no time. (whoops).
Finally: Don’t take yourself too seriously. Laugh off any cooking blunders as it’s the gesture that counts at the end of the day.
Happy Lovers Day!
